Axillary Hyperhydrosis

As well as the effect Botulinum Toxin A has on the neuromuscular junction to help reduce wrinkles, it also acts on the sweat glands to stop sweating. Botulinum Toxin A (Azzalure®/Botox®) blocks the nerves that supply the eccrine glands which then prevents the glands from producing sweat.  This treatment can be used to treat underarm sweating as well as sweating of the palms of the hands (palmer) and soles of the feet (plantar). However, in the UK Botulinum Toxin A is only licensed for treating axillary hyperhidrosis; palmer and plantar hyperhidrosis are best suited to medical practitioners specialising in these fields and we therefore do not offer training for these indications.

Botulinum Toxin A injections for underarm sweating is usually offered when topical treatments such as antiperspirants, aluminium chloride and iontophoresis have been unsuccessful.  The injections are very well tolerated and can be performed in the normal clinic environment.  The effect can last from 4 to 9 months so clients will need repeat treatments to help control their sweating.
